Uproot even venial sins right at the outset. If not, you may fall into mortal sins and finally be cast into hell.

Cardinal Peraniul of Austria has written the following incident in his book:

At the hour of a holy man’s death, many devils appeared to him and brought many strong temptations to him. But he did not yield to them. Knowing that the devils were trying to drag him to hell at any cost, he tried to fight back against the devils so as to win the temptations. But no matter how hard he fought against the temptations, they multiplied in number and strength.

At this juncture, he saw the heaven opening before his eyes and thousands of soldiers attired in pure white descending from there and approaching him saying “We have come to save you in this dangerous occasion. We will guard you until your death so as to save you from any harm.”

This vision gave him enormous courage and being very happy and shedding tears of joy, he asked them who they were. And they replied, “We are the many suffering souls who have been liberated from purgatory and have attained heaven, thanks to your virtuous deeds done for us. Now we have come here to be helpful to you and to take you to heaven with us.” The patient, very joyful hearing these words, overcame the temptations of the devil very easily and died a good death with a very good preparation.

Christians! You heard that this patient suffered a lot because of the temptations at the hour of his death. It may happen to you too, at the hour of your death. But if you want to overcome the temptations as he did, you must live holily like him and imitate him by offering Masses, almsgiving, fasting, prayers and virtues for the souls in purgatory. Then they will rush to help you at the time of your death to overcome the temptations of the devil.

Some people, when they are healthy and robust, give in to even very small temptations. How can such people win big temptations of Satan at the time of their death? So, even if your sin is only venial, do not be careless about it, but root it out from your soul as quickly as you find it. If you fail to do this when such sins invade you over and over again in great numbers, you may be unfortunate to commit at last mortal sins and cast into hell. Beware!
