The terrible punishment for venial sins in Purgatory.

A canon in the city of Cologne in Germany one day was riding on a horse. When he tried to cross the river Rhine where it was shallow, suddenly a man came out of the water and stopped the horse at the same place by grasping its reins. He seemed to be Bishop Severin who died some time ago to the priest on the horse. So, very much surprised, he asked the man, “Who are you and where are you from?” The man who came from under water introduced himself and asked him, “Stretch your hand to know at least a little how terrible my suffering is in purgatory.”

And he pulled the hand stretched to him into the water around him and the priest pulled his hand quickly unable to bear the heat. His hand became absolutely scalded by the heat of the water and blisters were formed. He felt that his hand muscles were going to fall apart. The priest, extremely suffering, asked the man, “My Lord, when you were with us, we regarded you as a Saint. It being so, why do you suffer so much?” The bishop replied: “As I had to take care of many things staying in the king’s palace, I did not say my Divine Office at the appointed hours, but said all the prayers at a stretch, either in the morning or after the sunset. I also gave in to distraction during my prayers. And this is why I am now suffering terribly in Purgatory. Let us pray that your scalded hand may be cured.” After they prayed together, his hand became alright like before. The bishop told the priest, “Your pain is over. Take some efforts to bring my pains to an end. Pray the priests and pious Christians in Cologne to offer for me Masses, prayers, their almsgiving, etc.” He then disappeared.

Christians! As you know now that the bishops suffered intolerable pains in such a horrible fire for mere venial sins, you must fear to do even such sins. Some think, “By the grace of God, there is no mortal sin in me. I have to be in Purgatory only for a very short time and then I will go to heaven” and carelessly fall in venial sins. Do not follow them. Even venial sins bring extremely terrible pain in Purgatory.

Those who knew the bishop’s holy life thought he must have been in heaven and hence did not think it necessary to make reparations for him. So he had to be in Purgatory for a long time. So, even if your parents, relatives and friends had lived a holy life, never come to a conclusion that their souls went straight to heaven without going to Purgatory, or after spending some time in Purgatory. When you offer your prayers for a particular soul, you must also pray that the merit of your prayers must be given to some other soul you mention in case the previous soul is not in Purgatory.

As shown in the above miracle, you must meditate how extremely terrible the punishment given to the absolved but unrepaired mortal sins must be, if the punishment for venial sins is so rigorous and you must avoid sins altogether. You must be afraid even to commit venial sins. “When compared to the fire of Purgatory, the fire on earth is like that on a picture” says the great Saint Thomas Aquinas. This being so, how can you be without fear to be burning in the fires of purgatory?

Therefore, that you may not suffer from the pains of the fires of Purgatory for your previous sins, do virtuous acts and reparations when you are still alive. Not only this, you must also help the souls of Purgatory by doing virtuous acts such as offering Masses, giving alms, praying, fasting etc. Then only you can avoid the pains of Purgatory. Never forget this even in your dreams.
