The souls in purgatory help us without forgetting the good deeds we did for them.

In Spain, there was a boy named ChristophSantaval. His parents loved him very much and gave him money now and then for his expenses. But he, unlike the other boys, instead of spending money to buy snacks and chocolates, gave it as an alms for the repose of the souls in purgatory. His devotion grew up more and more with his age.

When he grew up into a young man, his parents sent him to the City of Louen for higher studies. They were also sending him money necessary for his expenses. Once, because of some unexpected reason, the money did not reach him at the proper time and hence one day, he had to starve without food in the afternoon.

In such a situation, a beggar asked Christoph for alms in the name of souls in purgatory. Christoph became very sad as he had nothing to give. So though he was very hungry, he went to the church and began to pray for the souls in purgatory.

When he finished praying and was returning to his place, a young man called him. Christoph was afraid of him because the new one seemed to have come from another world. But the young man spoke about Christoph’s parents, their welfare, and gave information about the new occurrences in his native place, as though he came straight from there. He also led Christoph by hand into a house and gave him a delicious feast. Then he also gave some money and told him, “Spend this money as you wish. You need not reimburse it. I will receive it from your father in Spain.” Then saying that he had many works to do, he bid farewell and disappeared.

Christoph, wanting to know who his benefactor was, inquired his father in a letter about him. But he did not receive any satisfying reply. Moreover, coming to know that the young benefactor did not get back his money from Christoph’s father either, he came to a conclusion that it must be one of the souls in purgatory. It was that soul which came in the guise of that young man and had helped him in his misery. This conclusion increased his devotion to the souls in purgatory to a higher degree.

After his studies, Christoph was ordained as a priest, and then consecrated as a bishop.  When he went to Rome and met the Holy Father, he narrated this incident to him. The Holy Father appointed him as the bishop of Ceville and ordered him to spread this incident to everyone he would come across, in order to spread the devotion to the souls in purgatory to other Christians also.

Christians! Christoph enjoyed the benefit of his almsgiving for the repose of the souls in purgatory using the money given by his parents instead of spending it on tasty snacks and dishes.

Little children may say that they are not old enough to do acts of charity. It is not right. Some, though only children by their age, would venture like grownups in falling into grievous sins. Therefore when one reaches the age of reason, he can do a variety of good deeds also for the souls in purgatory.

It you are not in a position to help others, you can still help the souls in purgatory by your prayers, as Christoph did. He who receives alms from you may become ungrateful. But the Souls in Purgatory will always be grateful to you. They always pray for us for the helps we do to them. We see our kith and kin and even our children, while enjoying their parents’ properties, entirely forget them ungratefully. But the Souls in Purgatory will never be ungrateful to us.
