The punishment resulted due to the negligence of making reparations for the Souls in Purgatory.

A man built a bungalow in the city of Perara and lived happily in it with his children. After he died, his children began to hear spine-chilling noises in the nights. So, they were utterly frightened to stay in the house anymore and had to find new residences for their families. The others also, knowing about the mysterious noises, never dared to go near the house.

Once, the eldest son of the deceased owner of the house was expressing his sadness to some neighbors, about the house being laid waste when one of them ventured to say to him, “Sir, let me stay in the mansion. If the ghastly noises you mention cease to continue, you must give me right to stay in it for ten years. After that, I will hand it over to you again. Do you agree?”

And the eldest son consented to his condition. This man moved in to the house with a lot of books. In the daytime there was nothing to fear, but in the night he heard the noise of heavy chains dragged on the ground. Though fearful inside, he didn’t flee away, but began to read one of the books he brought with himself. However he had a constant eye fixed around him.

Suddenly he saw something that filled him with terror: he saw a tall man with big chains in his hands and legs, coming towards him. Coming closer, the newcomer asked him, “What book are you reading?” and the tenant answered him briefly. Without any further words, the man in chains sat beside him and remained in that position throughout the night.

After midnight, when the chime of bell from the nearby monastery was heard, the tall man slowly rose up and began to walk again. While the tenant was still watching, he entered into a grave outside the house and vanished from his eyes. The next day, the tenant enquired in the neighborhood about the grave and found that it belonged to the owner of the house. Then he approached some Catholic priests and made them offer a number of Masses for that soul. He himself also did virtuous acts in reparation for the sins of the deceased owner of the house. After this, the paranormal noises entirely ceased to be heard from the mansion. And it once again became suitable for inhabitation.

O Christians! After the owner of the house died, his children did nothing for the repose of his soul and that was why they could not stay in it anymore. But the helps done by the new tenant to the soul removed every fear and sadness.

The children who enjoy all the belongings of the parents after their death, simply forget to do anything to release them from the pains of Purgatory, thus abandoning them to be detained for a long time in the purging flames. Is it not your duty to offer Masses and other sacrificial acts for the repose of your parents’ souls if you do not want to undergo the same loss yourselves? Do not forget that what you do to your deceased parents will be done to you by your children after your death.

Those who resided in the mansion, hearing the ghastly noises, thought of the hand of the devil in it. Only later, it became obvious that the noise was made by a soul in purgatory. Many Christians ignore these suffering souls and do nothing to help them. But these souls, with the permission of Our Lord, appear to some people in order to instigate them to come forward to help them.

So, these suffering souls can enter into heaven much sooner, if we do all they need for their repose. Once in heaven, they will unceasingly pray for you with ineffable gratitude.
