The Punishment for not carrying out one’s duty towards the Souls in Purgatory.

In Italy, a soldier became sick and suffered a lot after working for his king for seven years. At the time of his death, he called his son in law and told him, “As I have no son, you take all my properties. Do me only one favor: when I die, please sell my horse and use the money to offer Masses and give alms for the repose of my soul.”

The son in law accepted his request and took all his properties after his death. But he was not willing, as requested by his father in law, to sell his horse which was very strong and well tamed. He became fond of it and rode on it many times to many places. In course of time, his fondness for the horse made him forgetaltogether the promise he made to his father in law at the time of his death.

Six months went by. One day, the dead man appeared to his son in law and condemned him in these words: “You traitor, How could you forget the promise you gave me? If you had sold my horse and offered Masses and almsgiving for my souls as I had requested, I would have ended my duration in Purgatory and gone to heaven. But because of your negligence, my soul was extremely suffering for the last six months. But blessed be the mercy of God, my pains are over and I am going to heaven now.

This is what Our Lord has decreed for you because you forgot me:

You will die in a few days. You will not be helped by any of your relatives when you suffer terribly in Purgatory.” And the soul disappeared.

The son in law, frightened by what he heard, told everything to the priest, made a good confession and began to make reparations for his sins. But just as predicted by his father in law, he died within a few days.

Brothers and sisters! The man mentioned in this incident did not help his father in law’s soul to attain eternal rest. Therefore he himself had to die in a few days and stay amidst the fires of Purgatory for a very long time.

Some Christians behave just like this man. The relatives such as mother, father, husband, wife, father in law or mother in law, at the time of their death call their relatives and give their properties to them and ask them to offer Masses, give alms to the poor and to do other reparatory acts to atone for their sins. The relatives who agree to do this, after his/her death, use all the property they got for their own good. But they forget ungratefully the souls who expected their help. But that such people will receive a severe punishment for such a crime is absolutely certain.

The property received like this may be lost in just a few days because of the sin of robbing it from the dead; the government may take them over for some reason; it may be stolen by thieves; sometimes, they may die quickly. And when they themselves go to Purgatory, they may not receive any help from their relatives. This is an undeniable truth.

Therefore at the time of death of your parents, husband, wife, kith and kin, if they ask your help for the repose of their soul, you must certainly fulfill their request. We must use their property, at least a part of it, to help them for the repose of their soul.
