The pains of purgatory is many time terrible than all the pains of the earth.

In Spain, Sister Francesca of the Society of St. Therese was very devoted to the souls in purgatory and was doing virtuous acts for them such as offering Masses, giving alms, fasting, etc. One day, with the permission of our Lord, some suffering souls appeared to her and begged her to help them. Sometimes they kept vigil around her cot when this holy virgin was sleeping. When she woke up and asked them, “Why have you come here?” they replied, “We came to request you to help us.” “Why didn’t you wake me up earlier? You need not wait for so long!” “We didn’t wake you up since disturbing you from deep slumber will bother your health.” When she prayed Rosary for the souls in purgatory, they would kiss her Rosary. When she was sick, they would say consoling words to her. Sometimes, they knew the evil plans of the devil about her and warned her about them earlier. One day a soul appeared before her with bottle of ink made of fire and a writing feather in its hands and told her, “I used these things when I was in the world to prepare bogus documents, and anonymous letters to slander others. Many were affected badly by this. Though I exposed my sins in confession and got absolution from God, now I am suffering terribly in the fires of Purgatory with these things.”  The others souls also showed her the things by which they were tortured and she graciously helped them with her virtuous deeds.

Christians! That nun took pity on the souls seeing the things used to torture them. But you must feel the same pity, even though you do not see such things. In order to stress the severity of the fires of Purgatory, St. Thomas Aquinas says: “The least pain in Purgatory is equivalent to the greatest pain on earth.” This is an example for us to understand the punitive nature of the pains of purgatory.

St. Mary Magdalene, a virtuous nun, who was given to see the pains of purgatory with her own eyes by the will of God says: “When compared to the pains of purgatory, the sufferings endured by our martyrs seem nothing to me. Their sufferings are the happiness of Eden, we can say!”

The Pains of Purgatory are so very horrible that even Saints have to use very harsh words with trembling to express it!
