The Mother of God is the Most Merciful Mother of the Souls in Purgatory.

Holy Mother of God, Who is the Queen of heaven and earth, once showed Herself to St. Bridget and announced to her that She is the Mother of the souls in purgatory and their pains diminish to a great degree due to Her prayers.

One day a soul from Purgatory came to this world and announced that “On the feast of the Assumption of the Divine Mother, numerous souls are released from purgatory by Herintercession.” St. Peter Damien wrote that this soul told him that “Without Her help, these souls would have to suffer in purgatory for still very longer a period.”

This Saint has narrated an apparition of Our Lady: “In Rome, a priest saw a vision during his meditation. In it, the Mother of God was sitting on Her throne, with so many religious sisters and angels around Her. At that time, a woman came there and knelt down before the Mother of God and shedding plenteous tears, she prayed to our Lady, saying: “O Mother of God! Have mercy on the soul of John who just died, because his soul is suffering a lot in the fires of Purgatory.” Our Lady did not give any immediate answer. But the woman did not seem to give up. She prayed once again, saying: “O Holy Mother! You know who I am. I am a beggar at the door of Your church. Once, when I was shivering in coldness, it was this John who helped me. I begged him to help me in Your name when he was about to enter the church. Hearing Your name, he mercifully gave his mantle to me. I pray to You to show mercy to his soul for such a good deed.”

And then the Blessed Mother happily said, “Dear child, It is the decree of the Lord that John must be in Purgatory for a very long time for his sins. But I will advocate for him because he had two virtuous habits, that of giving alms to the poor and of lighting candles before My statues and pray to Me.”  And then She commanded the angels to bring the soul of John before Herself.

The Angels having done so, the Blessed Mother made them untie the chain of fire by which John was tied and took him with Herself into heaven.

Brothers and sisters! Give alms to the poor in the Name of God during your lifetime. If your soul were in Purgatory after your death, you, like John, will also surely receive the help of the Blessed Mother.

If you lit candles and pray before a statue of Our Lady, or if you do other virtuous acts, even if God were to command you to be detained in purgatory for a very long time, your pains may quickly vanish due to the intercession of the Blessed Mother. But this is not the case with those who lived and died in sin and have fallen into hell.

That poor woman prayed for John immediately after his death, because he gave his mantle to her. Brothers and sisters! Your parents might have given you so many worldly assets. Is it possible for you to assess what they had spent for you in your lifetime? And is it justice on your part to forget your parents after their death and avoid praying for them?

As the Divine Mother Herself has declared that She is the Mother of the souls in purgatory, we can make Her happy through our acts of charity such as praying for the suffering souls, giving alms to the poor and beggars, keeping fast and abstinence, etc. And our dear Mother will also be very loving towards you because of such virtuous acts of yours!
