The Horror of the Chastisement of Purgatory.

St. Augustine says that the pain of the purging flames is far more terrific than the most horrible sufferings and terrible pains of this world.

There were two priests in a monastery in Austria. They were good friends and lived as saints doing many virtuous deeds. When one of them became sick and was suffering a lot, his guardian angel appeared to him and announced him that he was going to die after a few hours and will go to suffer in the flames of Purgatory, that his pains would continue until the other priest would offer a Mass for him and that after the Mass he would go to heaven. Saying this, the Angel disappeared.

The priest who was bed-ridden called for his priestly friend and narrating the vision to him, he requested to say and offer a Mass immediately after his death. His friend also agreed to fulfill his request.

The sick priest died the next morning and his friend, even before his burial, celebrated a Mass and offered it for his priestly friend. When he was praying in the church after the Mass, the spirit of the dead priest appeared to him and with a sad tone in its voice, asked him, “Brother, what happened to your friendship? Why have you been so merciless towards me?” The priest, apparently shocked to hear these words, asked the soul before him, “Brother, why do you say so?” And the soul of the dead priest replied, “You forgot your promise to me of saying a Mass immediately after my death and fulfilled it only a year after my death. And because of your fault, I had to suffer the terrible pains of purgatory for a whole year!”

The priest now turned the question towards the soul of his friend,. “How can it be? You died only today. Your body is yet to be taken to the grave. I offered the Massed immediately after your death. The truth being so, how can you say that I celebrated the Mass only after a year?” he asked.

Then only the dead priest realized what happened. “The pain of Purgatory is so horrible that even a few minutes there seem to be so many years. I have deemed this short time as a long year in purgatory. But now I have been released from all my pains, thanks to the Mass you offered for me immediately. Now I am going to heaven. And I will pray there to our Lord incessantly for you who have helped me to receive such a noble benefit.” Thus saying happily, he went to heaven.

Brothers and sisters! Even a few minutes in this world seemed to be a full long year to that religious priest in Purgatory. So, if you were to be detained in purgatory for one year, it may seem to be a thousand years to you because of the excruciating pains. Therefore you must not only avoid sin but also make reparations for your past sins now.

When your parents or relatives die, you must start immediately to do reparatory acts such as praying, almsgiving, offering Masses etc. for their souls without any delay. If you delay for one or two months to start to do the virtuous acts, the souls of the dead will find it as so many years, won’t they?

If a cow in your house falls into the well, won’t you take all measures immediately to lift it up? But your relative’s soul has fallen into the fiery well of purgatory, you delay to help them to be set free from the pains and go to heaven, do you think this is right? See how immensely they have to suffer because of your delay! Is this delay not a grievous cruelty on your part?

If you quickly help the suffering souls and if they reach the beatitude of heaven, they will incessantly pray for you to God.
