The Benefits received by the Souls in Purgatory through Prayer.

There was a bishop, who was very pious and devoted to the suffering souls, in Austria. One day, when he was napping in the afternoon, he saw a vision. In it, a young man had a fish hook made of Gold in his hand, which was tied to a white twine. With it he was lifting a woman from a deep well. He woke up with a jerk and went to the back door of the house. There he saw a young man standing near a grave. And as the bishop saw in him the likeness of the one in the vision, asked him, “What are you doing here?” “This is my mother’s tomb. I recited an Our Father and a Hail Mary for the repose of her soul” he replied. When the bishop heard these words, he felt within himself an announcement of God: “The golden hook you saw in the vision is the Our Father he said. The white thread is Hail Mary. The woman lifted from the well was his mother. And she was liberated from purgatory by the prayers he said just now and went to heaven,” the voice of the Lord explained.

Some children utterly forget their parents after their death and do nothing to help these souls. What an ingratitude!

O ungrateful sons and daughters! Did you realize how your mother suffered carrying you in her womb for ten months, how she risked her life in begetting you? Can you forget her who breast-fed you in your childhood, who then kept vigil near your bed so many times and brought you up with utmost care and did abundant services to you? Can you live with a heart of stone without doing any favor for her eternal rest? What would she think of you? Won’t she feel sad thinking, ‘How ungrateful my children are!”

Likewise, can you forget your father who took every trouble upon himself to bring you to a good position in life? What would that soul think about you, if it were in Purgatory? Won’t he think you to be terribly ungrateful! So at least from now on, try to pray, make penances and offer Masses for them so that they may be liberated from purgatory and go to heaven.
