Souls in Purgatory - A NOTE OF FELICITATION

I immensely congratulate Dr. A. Raja Pinheiro on his printing and publishing of this wonderful book, “52 Miracles of the Holy Souls in Purgatory.” First of all, this book is very much necessary for the present day people, because even so many Catholics today do not shrink back to say that heaven, purgatory and hell are nothing but mere myths and fictions. They say that God is all-loving, that He would forgive all our sins and would never cast us into hell for an eternity. Of course, the Merciful God will forgive all our sins, if we beg for it. But at the same time, He is also a God of Justice. He would never let our sins go unpunished. Therefore, I hope that this book would give a shock treatment to many Catholics and non-Catholics with its elaborations on Purgatory. This book which announces the Truth without any hiding or denial or secrecy is indispensable for our times. I heartily bless Dr. A. Raja Pinheiro for having published this book.

Rev. Fr. James Thomas de Rosci, S.J. was born in 1701 in Italy and entered into the Society of Jesus in 1721. He wrote the book, “Monday Miracle” when he was serving as a missionary in the Diocese of Sivagangai of Madurai Mission. He was famously known as “Xavier the Less.” The Mission Press of Pondicherry has already published nine editions of this book. Now, Dr. A. Raja Pinheiro, despite various hindrances which he faced, has published this book under the title, “52 Miracles of the Holy Souls in Purgatory” because of his unyielding devotion to the Souls of Purgatory and with an intention of saving every one of us from this terrible chastisement and with a deep yearning that all the Christians may repent, give up sins, grow in virtue and become saints. He has also added new words and his own opinions and advices to this book.

The schismatic sects and a few Catholics argue thatnot even the word Purgatory is in the Bible. The Bible came into existence in the beginning as oral teaching only, and then only it was committed to writing. The teaching on the existence of Purgatory has been in the Catholic Tradition right from the outset. For example, even in the Old Testament, the second Book of Maccabees teaches us this: “And making a gathering, he sent twelve thousand drachmas of silver to Jerusalem for sacrifice to be offered for the sins of the dead, thinking well and religiously concerning the resurrection, (For if he had not hoped that the men that were slain should rise again, it would have seemed superfluous and vain to pray forthe dead,) It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins” (12:43, 44, 46). And exactly this is why every Catholic priest offers three Holy Masses on the 2nd day of November for the repose of Souls in Purgatory. Besides, it has been written: “There shall not enter into it (that is, into Heaven which is the Temple of God Almighty), anything defiled, or that works abomination or makes a lie, but they that are written in the book of life of the Lamb” (Apoc.21:27). And Our Lord Jesus Christ also declares that “Whosoever shall say, You Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire” (Matt.5:22). As the Schismatic Sects have entirely denied the Books of Maccabees, they also deny the existence of Purgatory.

‘Purgatory’ is a place where we make reparations for the sins we committed on earth. It is an immense gift of the all-merciful God. Let us bless God our Father with infinite gratitude and love for His mercy, Who, knowing human weakness, deigned to cleanse the souls of men after their death with the flames of His Divine Love and receive them into the Kingdom of Heaven once they reached the purity of the same Love.

In this temporary place, even those who had committed venial sins must suffer most horrible pains, because God Himself commands us, “Be ye holy, because I the Lord your God am holy” (Levit.19:2). Who is holy like unto God? In the 46th miracle of this book, we see a priest riding on his horse. When he was crossing a river, a mysterious hand obstructed the horse from going further. The priest, obviously shocked and mystified, asked, “Who are you and why are you stopping me?” Then he heard a voice saying, “I am the bishop you deemed to be saintly. But now I am terribly suffering in Purgatory for a venial sin I committed.” The priest again asked, “What was that venial sin?” “I was wont to say all the prayers of the Breviary destined to various hours of the day at a stretch. I prayed all of them in the morning. If hindered by my duties, I prayed them together at night. My venial sin was that I did not pray them at their usual hours.” And then the bishop dipped the priest’s hand into the water where he was standing and it was scalded instantly. The priest pulled his hand back quickly.

Moreover, Dr. A Raja Pinheiro tells us what we have to do to avoid such a dreadful pain. He has shed light on the excruciatingly painful punishments for ordinary sins, for grievous sins and for very grievous sins, in a detailed list.

He has pointed out 10 ways of reducing the duration of the punishment of purgation. This is very important for all of us. He has explained what the world, the purgatory, heaven and hell really are.

Finally, we know that death would come like a thief. It comes at six or sixty, in sickness or in good health, in youth or in old age, in the night or day, it may come on the earth or in water, or by fire. No one can say where, when and how it may come. Therefore, let us decide today itself to renounce sin and follow the path shown by Our Lord and followed by the saints.

This book is a scourge to those who live without the Fear of and devotion to the Lord. I heartily bless Dr. A. Raja Pinheiro who has given us a guidance to attain eternal heaven by faithfully following Christ Who has said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.” Hail his holy divine service! May his Catholic service grow ever and ever!
