Offering Mass for the Souls in Purgatory is the best help we can do to them.

In Spain, there was a woman named SanchGarlio who was the daughter of a rich man. One night, when she was sleeping, she felt a heavy burden upon her. When she opened her eyes, to her utter fright, she saw the soul of her deceased maid before her. “Sanch, I suffer a lot in Purgatory because of this child I have in my hands. You must offer some Masses for me so that this pain might end as early as possible” the maid said and then disappeared. This maid had become pregnant before marriage. At her time of death, she made a good confession and received absolution to her sins. God did not condemn her to hell because of her confession, but still, as Sanch thought, she was suffering terribly in Purgatory to atone for her sins. But Sanch, in spite of her maid’s request, offered other virtuous acts for that soul instead of offering Masses for her. After a few days, Sanch felt the same pressure upon her during her sleep at night. It was only with difficulty she could open her eyes. And the maid complained to her saying, “Why did not you offer Masses for me and show me mercy as I requested you earlier?” The next day Sanch had some priests offer Masses for this soul and she also assisted at a Mass piously and without any distraction and offered all these virtuous acts for the soul of the maid. After this, that soul did not disturb her, nor did she appear to her again.

Christians! St. Augustine says that his mother Monica requested him with a great desire, to offer Masses for her soul after her death. So, brothers and sisters, come forward to have Masses said and to offer them for the souls of the dead.  When it is not possible, assist at Masses piously and without distractions and offer this virtue for the Souls in Purgatory as Sanch did. Attending Mass with distractions will not be advantageous. Some people, when coming to assist at an obligatory Mass, deliberately and out of sloth, come a little later or even after the sermon. And during the Mass, they sit in the corners of the church and watching others like spies, without any intention of ‘attending’ the Mass. Some attend Mass without any piety. They are in the church without any reverence and they behave as if they are in their own house. Some go to the extent of spitting and belching aloud in the church during Mass. Some speak aloud among them thus distracting the attention of others also. Some mothers do not even try to stop the shouts and cries of their babies. And we have to say that these are harming the harmony of the Holy Mass. Especially, women watching happily their children playing during Mass are a dishonor to the Mass, we must say. All these, with their impiety during Mass, become ones who do not take any measures to put out the flames which torment the souls in Purgatory.

Be merciful to the Souls in Purgatory who are being terribly tormented in the flames of Purgatory. The earthly fire was created by God as a help to men and not as a punishment to them. But since the fire of Purgatory has the sole purpose of cleansing the souls by tormenting them, it gives extreme pains.

Therefore, know that only a Mass attended by you with piety and attention and offered for the suffering souls is beneficial to them.
