We also receive so many benefits when we help the Poor Souls of Purgatory.

In Naples, there lived a poor laborer with his wife. Even though they both worked hard, the income was so meagre that they had to borrow money to run their lives. But they had much difficulty in repaying their debts.

Likewise, once, when they could not repay a loan they received, the lender complained against the husband and sent him to prison. His wife became very grieved.

Having no means to save her husband and children, she frequently took refuge to prayers to the Lord God. One day, she was talking to others about her hardships when one of her listeners mentioned the name of a rich man in that city and advised her to ask him for help. She having done so, the rich man also gave her some money.

On the way back home, thinking that this meagre amount of money would not be enough to redeem her husband from prison, she became very sorrowful and finding a church on the way, she entered into it and prayed to Our Lord with tears.

At that moment, through her guardian angel, a good thought flashed in her mind. She remembered that the souls in purgatory would, in turn, immensely help those who help them. So, putting all her trust in the suffering souls, she paid for a Mass for the souls in purgatory and also gave alms on their behalf.

On returning home with a peaceful mind, she met an old man, grey-haired. He asked her, “Why are you so sad, my child? What makes you so unhappy?” and she answered describing her desolate state. Thereupon, the oldman who took pity on her, gave her a letter and said to her, “My daughter, show this letter to the rich man mentioned in it. He will help you.” And she did what she was told.

The rich man was none other than the same man who helped her the same day. He was absolutely astonished when he read the letter. Yes, he found that the handwriting was exactly that of his deceased father. Extremely amazed, he asked her, “Woman, who gave this letter to you?” and she began to describe the features of the old man she met, when suddenly her eyes fixed on a portrait on the wall of the mansion. She pointed it out and said, “Sir, it was he who gave this letter to me.”

It was the portrait of the rich man’s deceased father. Hearing her words, he went through the letter with eagerness. It read: “My son, it was the Mass offered by this good woman which brought my purgatory to an end. Now, I am going to heaven. As this poor woman was merciful to me, you must also be mercifulto her and help her.” He read it again and again and shed tears out of love for his father.

Then he turned to the woman and said, “My dear sister, the soul of my father was blessed by your charitable act. I will repay your husband’s debts and I will provide for your family till my death. Henceforth, you need not worry about your family and yourself. Be happy.” He kept his promise throughout his life.

Christians! Many people offer a single Mass for their parents on their death anniversary and provide food for some poor people on their birthdays and then forget them altogether. If their children catch fire and cry out of extreme pain, would they become content after spraying a few drops of water on them, or would they use plenty of water on them to put out fire and then take measures to cure them as quickly as possible? Think a little. Likewise, if the children, who did some charitable acts only on the anniversaries of their deceased mother, who breast-fed them and took loving care of them throughout their childhood and youth and the father who worked hard in order to provide them with everything needed, if they give alms on their behalf only one day to the beggars and then forget them altogether ungratefully, would this be fair enough? Christians! Give a little thought to this and do your duties accordingly. You must remember them as frequently as possible and do reparatory acts for their souls. Then only your children will also help you in your needs.
