The Souls in Purgatory, once they reach heaven, save their benefactors from all perils of life.

In Austria, there was a duke, who, in his youth, spent his wealth in many sinful ways. He also spent a lot of money to maintain a legion of many soldiers for himself. One day, he heard the sermon  of a Dominican priest and was converted by it. He gave up all his evil ways and began to live as a good Catholic and grow in virtues. He also reduced the number of unnecessary soldiers, keeping only a small legion, because he found the previous large legion as a white elephant causing a big loss of money. He gave the money saved in this way to the priests so that they might offer Masses for the Souls in Purgatory.

The soldiers dismissed thus wanted to take revenge on the duke and they joined in the army of another duke who had been an enemy of the previous one.  They also counseled their new master that this was the suitable time to capture the dukedom of the Austrian duke because it would be easy to defeat his small legion with the big army of the new one. And this duke, believing what they said, declared war on the Austrian duke. A messenger sent by him announced the news to the Austrian duke. And he called back the soldiers whom he dismissed, but they refused to return, saying, “You dismissed us and gave our salaries to the priests, didn’t you? Now let the priests fight for you. We won’t come.” The duke was not disheartened. Knowing well that his legion is too small to win the battle, he decided to obtain the help of the souls in Purgatory. He gave more money to the priests and asked them to offer Masses for the suffering souls. Then unwilling to go to the battle field, he reinforced his fort to be ready for the war, putting all his trust in Our Lord and the Souls in Purgatory. At this time, his spy came in and told, “Lord, the great legion is already on the march towards us. It will arrive here in a few days.” When he saw the duke in a worried state, he told him, “Lord, why should you be afraid? Will the souls in purgatory abandon you? Do not fear. The Souls who went to heaven with your help will be so grateful as to help you and save you from your enemies now.” Saying this, he just disappeared!

Some would say they have no money, no way to find money, to do charitable acts such as almsgiving for the repose of their parents. But they will not hesitate to spend plenteous money unnecessarily for special occasions like marriages, last rites of the dead, etc. As the duke in this miracle was merciful to the souls in purgatory and had the priests offer Holy Masses for their eternal rest, he was saved at the right time from his enemies. When you help these suffering souls, you can be certain that they will save you also from dangers and sufferings.
