The Souls in Purgatory are always grateful. The benefits obtained by Suffering Souls from our Fasts, Penances and Prayers.

When Samson, the pious king of Leon, died a good death, his virtuous wife who loved him very much, had many priests celebrate and offer Masses for him. She also gave plenty of alms to the poor. Then she went to a convent and did so many penances together with the nuns and offered them too for her husband’s soul. Moreover, she kept fast every Saturday, the day dedicated to our Lady and prayed to Her for the quick liberation of the soul of her husband from the flames of purgation. As she was praying vigorously for her husband before the statue of Our Lady, he appeared to her as tied by a chain of fire and told her, “I am extremely grateful to you for all your virtuous acts. But, if you know how harshly I suffer because of this chain, you would be more merciful towards me. In the name of the infinite Mercy of God, help me in my fiery suffering.” He then vanished. The queen began to cry being unable to bear the vision she had. And from that day on, she kept fasting for the next forty days without fail and continued to give alms to the poor. Finally, on the 40th day, she gifted an expensive mantle woven with golden threads to the church of St. Stephen as the fulfilment of an oath and wholeheartedly prayed to Our Lady for the relief of her husband. At the same moment, her husband appeared to her, shining with heavenly brilliance. He was splendid with glory and happiness, wearing a cloth made of golden threads. He told her, “My dear pious wife, my purgatorial pains are over thanks to your virtuous acts. You will be blessed by the Lord always. Continue to grow in your virtue. I am going to heaven now. There I will pray for you.” When the woman tried to embrace her husband with inexpressible love and joy, he instantly disappeared from her eyes. But she caught hold of the mantle he had worn. When she observed it, she found it to be extremely identical to the one she gave to the church of St. Stephen as a pledge. When she sent someone to the church and enquired about it, it was found that the mantle was not in the church. Very much amazed, she presented the mantle again to the church of St. Stephen.

Christians! The king’s wife prayed to the Blessed Mother, trusting in Her powerful intercession that her husband’s pains might come to an end soon. Her desire was fulfilled.  You too prayand do virtuous acts with filial confidence to Our Lady for the quick relief of any soul you want to set free from Purgatory. It is the most terrible pain for the departed souls being unable tosee God.

It is said that a devil once told that it would be ready to suffer all the pains of hell up to the Day of General Judgment, had it been allowed to behold God just for a second!

You must do many virtuous acts to allow the souls in purgatory to be admitted for the beatific vision. When they are likewise allowed to the beatific vision, they will thank you like the king who thanked his wife and promised to pray for her in heaven and they will pray for you until seeing you too entering into the beatific vision.
