The inexpressible punishment suffered by the souls who made others fall into sin.

There was a certain Christian in Spain who was very gifted in painting. When he was young, he drew a painting that could easily induce lustful feelings in the minds of those who looked at it. Many good people did not even dare to see this painting. A rich man bought it with evil desire and kept it in his house. Many were dragged into the sins of lust because of this painting.

This painter repented for his sins and became a good Christian only in his old age. He very much grieved about having drawn such a vulgar painting and as a reparation, he offered prayers and other acts of virtue to God. He began to draw the painting of Our Lord, His Holy Mother and the Saints. And he died a good death at a very old age.

Some days after his death, he appeared to a priest of the Society of St. Therese and told him, “Father, please show me mercy, because I am in Purgatory. My right hand is suffering extremely in this fire of Divine Justice for having drawn that lustful painting.” Saying this, he began to weep very bitterly.

The priest asked him: “I know that you have drawn many paintings of Our Lady and Saints. But for what sinful painting are you suffering in the flames of Purgatory?” and the soul of the painter replied: “In the Private Judgment after my death, I was giving account of my life to Christ when a devil put forward a complaint against me. It said that the obscene picture I painted is still in the palace of a duke, that it is still inducing many to commit sins of impurity and also that some have already been condemned to hell because of that painting. But my guardian angel interrupted it by reminding my confession with true contrition of the sin and my reparatory acts for it. He also indicated the fact that many had become pious and faithful to God because of my paintings of Our Lady and the Saints. Accepting his recommendations, our Lord Jesus Christ forgave me and did not condemn me to hell, but sent me to Purgatory. I cannot escape from these pains until the indecent painting in the duke’s mansion will be destroyed. And this is for what I have come to you. Please help me. Go to that duke and advise him to burn the painting immediately. You must also give him a message, hearing which he will surely accept your advice.

“In a few days, the duke’s two children will pass away. If he were not to accept your word,  God has decreed that the duke himself must die in a few days. Tell him all this and he will surely burn that painting.” Saying this, the soul disappeared.

The priest immediately set out and meeting the duke, he told everything that happened. And the duke, utterly frightened, immediately burnt the painting with his own hands. However, as predicted, two of his children died in a few days. The duke, absolutely horrified, not only did his best to atone for his sin of keeping the painting in his house for a long time, but also bought many expensive pictures of Our Lady and the saints and filled his mansion with them.

After his conversion, the priest saw in a vision the soul of the painter being released from Purgatory and ascending to heaven.

Brothers and sisters! Many committed sins of lust because the painter created such an obscene painting. He who was indirectly responsible for the lustful sins of others repented for his sin and atoned for it by doing prayers and penances. But still he had to go to purgatory because the picture he painted was still inciting many to sins of impurity.

Today, many sing vulgar songs that incite others to sin. Many women seduce others to fall into sin by exhibiting their physical charms. Such people who instigate others to sin must not forget that until their evil creation will be utterly destroyed, they will be detained endlessly in purgatory, thus suffering a very horrible punishment of God there.

Therefore, do not give in to sins of lust to avoid such a punishment. Do not hear stimulating songs and avoid watching lustful scenes in any form. You too women, do not allow your eyes to see anything lustful.

That painter, in order to atone for his sin, painted the pictures of the Blessed Mother and of the Saints. Advise those who are eager to see vulgarity and thus seducing themselves to be contrite for their sins and do penance for their atonement. Also help them to convert and lead a good life.

The duke, though the painting was very dear to him, burnt it to help the soul of the painter who was suffering atrocious pains in Purgatory. If you want to help the souls in Purgatory more, sell whatever you love most and distribute the money among the poor.

In this world you see the sufferings of the poor and you help them out of mercy. But such a mercy is not induced in your hearts because you cannot see for yourselves the pains of the souls in Purgatory. But always remember the words of St. Augustine: The pains of Purgatory is incomparably horrible than all the sufferings of this world.
