The immense gratitude of the Souls in Purgatory.

In France, there was a very virtuous Christian who was giving much importance to the eternal rest of the suffering souls in purgatory and doing virtuous acts for the purpose. He not only gave plenty of alms to the poor in the name of these souls, but whenever he went across a graveyard which contained many tombs, he stood there for some time and prayed to God for the souls of those who were buried there without fail.

One day, he became ill and bed-ridden and was about to die. A priest came in, heard his confession, gave him Holy Viaticum and the Sacrament of the Dying and filled him with spiritual happiness. When he was about to return from the house, he heard a clear voice, saying these words:

“O you, who are in these tombs, come out of them. The man who prayed for us, the souls of purgatory, whenever he crossed this way has died just now. Let us go to the church and pray for him to show our gratitude to him.”

He also heard the movement of bones from the graves. Many went to the church nearby and prayed for some time, calmly and in an orderly fashion. Then the priest heard the sound of souls returning to their graves again. The priest returned to his monastery utterly astonished. In a few minutes a man from the house from which he had just returned came to him and announced that the one whom he prepared for a good death, passed away like a saint, with good preparation.

When you help others, do it in honor of our Lord and to the profit of the Souls in Purgatory. These souls will be grateful even if those who received these helps may be ungrateful. These souls will be helpful to you and will pray to our Lord for you. Your prayers will be fulfilled because of their prayers for you, because, as they are very dear to our Lord, He will unfailingly grant their entreaties.

Christians! Whenever you happen to see tombs, especially those of your relatives, stand there for a few minutes, as that young man did and pray an Our Father and a Hail Mary. It will be very useful to the souls in purgatory.

St. Catherine of Bologna says: “If I pray for some special grace for myself, I always pray only through the Souls in Purgatory. It is granted immediately.” She also says: “Sometimes, even some of my prayers through the blessed souls in heaven would go unanswered. But when I ask the same request through the Suffering Souls, God always deigns to command its accomplishment.”

The trust this saint had on the Holy Souls in Purgatory is astonishing. If you have not tried to ask favors like this saint, ask your requests through souls in purgatory. It gives unfailing benefit. Never forget these suffering souls. God definitely will hear the prayers of these souls.
