The holiness to be possessed by the souls in this world to escape the pains of Purgatory.

Once there was a pious and virtuous widow in Villenbroch of the province of Liez who had two daughters. They progressed in the path of perfection, thanks to the good example and useful counsels of their mother. They had decided to enter into the religious life and live as nuns. Hence, the whole family was highly respected by the habitants of their city.

One day, the mother suddenly became sick and was bed-ridden. There was a pious woman named Ogni Maria in the nearby town who had a special love for the widow. Therefore, hearing about the sickness of her friend, she came to her house to meet her. And there, she saw a vision.

She saw the sick widow lying on her bed while the Queen of heaven and the Mother of God, seated Herself near the bed and was fanning the widow, who was suffering from a high fever and humidity, with a hand-fan. This blessed sick woman was enjoying a great relief from the heat due to the circulation of air made by Our Lady Herself. Ogni Maria also saw St. Peter, who, making the sign of the Cross, was chasing away many devils which were waiting outside the door in fear of the Blessed Mother,

The soul of the widow, immediately after being separated from her body, went to Purgatory. Ogni Maria, in her meditation, saw the soul of the widow, suffering greatly in the flames of Purgatory in reparation to her venial sins. Ogni Maria revealed this vision to the widow’s daughters.

These three began to attend Masses every day, and offer prayers, fasts and other reparatory acts everyday for the eternal repose of the soul of this widow. After many days, one day, when Ogni Maria was in meditation, the soul of the widow appeared to her as bright as the sun and told her: “I was in Purgatory so far, for my venial sins. And the untold pain of purgatory was bearable to me, because of the penances you and my daughters offered for me. Now I am happily going to heaven.” After saying this, she went to heaven with glory and extreme happiness.

Dear brothers and sisters! Although that widow was very dear to the Mother of God, she had to undergo the pains of Purgatory for a very long time because of her venial sins. So, we must live in this world avoiding even our venial sins so as not to suffer this untold pain for a long time. And we must try to make reparation for our known and unknown sins by attending and offering Holy Masses, by praying and by doing good works.

Our deceased parents and relatives, even though they had lived an exemplary life, may have to be in Purgatory for a long period to be purged from their venial sins. So we must not forget them.  We must help their souls through attending and offering Masses, almsgiving, fasting and prayers. If we do this, they will attain heavenly bliss very soon because of our help.
