The great benefits obtained by those who offer their virtues for the Suffering Souls.

In Germany,a religious sister named Gertrude was very merciful towards the Holy Souls in Purgatory. When she woke up every morning, she knelt down and said this prayer: “My Lord! I offer Youall the virtues I do today through Your grace so that the pains suffered by the Souls in Purgatory may end up soon.” She attended Masses and offered them, gave alms, prayed and did penances for the suffering souls. She beseeched Jesus Christ to announce to her which of the Holy Souls were suffering more than others. And as our Lord deigned to reveal it to her, she offered her virtuous acts for those souls in a special way. In this way, she delivered many souls from purgatory and sent them to heaven. They all appeared to Gertrude and thanked her before they went to heaven.

As she was continuing to do good to the Suffering Souls for a long time, a devil became very envious about her and induced a wrong thought in her mind. “I will die after some time. By the mercy of the Lord, I did many virtuous acts for so many years and offered them all for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. However, I did not do any virtue as an atonement for my own sins. Many souls were saved from a long term of detention in purgatory, but won’t I have to suffer for a long time in that fire? Did I act foolishly so far?” she asked herself and became very sorrowful one day.

Our Lord Jesus, reading her thought, appeared to her and asked, “Why are you sorrowful?” Gertrude replied: “Lord! You know well that I offered all the virtues I did with Your help for the souls in purgatory. If I die, I will not even be able to say that a single virtue had been offered in reparation to my own sins. So I am afraid that I would have to be in Purgatory for a long time.”

And our Lord answered to her: “My daughter, I give you a message so that you may come to know how I love you because you offered all your virtues for the Souls in Purgatory. Listen: I will make every virtue you offered for these souls to be your own benefit and forgive all the sufferings you will have to endure in Purgatory. And I will make you obtain a great beatitude in heaven. I will give a command to all the souls who were relieved from the pains of purgatory by your virtues, to escort you to heaven and to welcome you into it happily.” Then He disappeared.

Christians! The devil will be jealous about the Souls in Purgatory and try to stop you from helping them. Just like Gertrude came out of such a state with the help of our Lord, you too keep these words of Our Lord in mind and avoid such distracting thoughts raised by the devil. Continue to do good to these souls.

Then only the words of Jesus, “with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you again” (Matt.7:2) will be suitable to you in your life in this world and in the next.
