Souls in Purgatory - ABOUT THIS BOOK

Rev. Fr. James Thomas de Rosci was born in Italy in the year 1701 A.D.  He entered the Society of Jesus in 1721 and came to Diocese of Sivagangai in Madurai Mission in 1736. He wrote many books including the one that comprised of 52 miracles concerning the Holy Souls in Purgatory. He was fondly called as “Xavier the Less” by the people. He died in 1774. His book on the Holy Souls in Purgatory was published by the Mission Press, Pondicherry, for the first time in 1860 and thereupon found eight more editions. The final edition was published in 2012 with the “Imprimatur” of the Most Rev. Antony Anandarayar, Archbishop of Pondicherry. This book elaborately deals with the pains and agonies suffered by the poor Souls in Purgatory, the helps which we can render to them and their return of love to their benefactors. It also explains in detail the various terrible punishments we would have to suffer in Purgatory even for our venial sins. It teaches that a majority of the souls in Purgatory will have to suffer in the horrendous flames of Purgatory for a time really very long.

For example: the soul of Innocentius who died in Rome appeared to St. Lutgarde and confided to her, “God has decreed that I must be in Purgatory until the Day of the General Judgment.” Alexandra of Aragonia, in an apparition to St. Dominic, told him: “I have been detained in Purgatory for the last 700 years!” (See the 29th miracle).

St. Vincent Ferrer informs us that “Every soul is sentenced to Purgatory according to the gravity of its sins and the length of its life in this world.” (See in the 50th miracle.)

A list addedat the end of this book gives accurate details as to how many years one would have to suffer in the fires of Purgatory for an ordinary sin, a grievous sin and a very grievous sin committed once in a day.

This life on earth is not eternal. It is very important to decide, while reading this book, whether we, after death, would go directly to heaven, or would have to do a terrible penance in Purgatory or would be cursed to eternal hell (whence the soul can never return). And let us not forget that we go nearer to our death with every passing minute and day.
