A Miracle worked out through praying the Litany of our Lady for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

In Austria, a pious man had the habit of reciting the Litany of Our Lady and offering it for the souls of Purgatory every day before going to bed at night. He kept this habit for many years. One day, his enemies planned to kill him. They entered his house silently when he was sound asleep. They went near his bed with the intention of slashing him to death with a knife, but found that he was not on the bed. Thinking that he might be hiding somewhere inside the house somewhere, they searched everywhere but for no avail and went away with unsatisfied rage. What happened in fact was that he did not hide anywhere. He did not even know what danger was impending to him. He simply was sleeping peacefully on the same cot. But Our Lady Herself hid him from the eyes of his enemies as a reward to his habit of reciting Her Litany every night. And this is why his enemies could not even see him who was lying on his bed before their eyes. The next day, they saw him going out as always. They also found that there was only one entrance to the house. Then, how could have he escaped from his enemies? This surprised them a lot and finally they made peace with him. Then relating what they did the other night, they asked him what really happened. He himself realized only then what miracle had happened to him, explained, “This has happened only through the prayers of the Suffering Souls. I was only on my bed. But as always, before going to bed, I recited the Litany of Our Lady and offered it for these souls, and that was why you could not see me, even when you were so close to me. This miracle has been worked out by our Lady through the prayers of the Souls in Purgatory.”

Christians! If you help the souls in purgatory, you will receive many benefits through them. “Though they know not your help done to them, God Himself let them know it or let His angels announce it to them” says St. Augustine. Moreover, when these souls feel the heat of the fire tormenting them sometimes declining, even though they cannot know who favored them, they pray for their benefactors. “O Lord, reward our benefactors a hundredfold” they pray to Our Lord. And as these are very dear to Him, He immediately hears their prayers. Some may think, “Why should I offer all my virtuous deeds for the souls in Purgatory? What does it avail to my soul?” and thus they fail to help them. Do not give room to this thought. Seeing a rich man named Borromeo very generously helping beggars, a man blamed him saying, “If you continue to spend like this, what will happen to your children? You are making them future beggars.” But the rich man replied wisely, “I am helping the beggars who are the children of God. So God will look after my children.” And as a great reward to his benevolence towards the poor, one of his sons, Carlo became canonized by the Catholic Church as a Saint. His other children also lived very happily and with a great influence in the society.

The prayers which the Suffering Souls place before their Holy Mother, the Mother of God, never fail to grant them what they beseech.
